Summary
Harness should let teams scope account-, org-, and project-level notification rules to specific pipelines (or sets of pipelines, for example by tag, name pattern, or template). Today these rules apply to every pipeline in the scope with no way to filter. Notifications therefore can’t be routed to the team that owns a given pipeline when a project is shared by several teams.
Background
Harness offers two places to configure notifications:
Pipeline-level notifications, which are tied to one pipeline and can target that pipeline’s owning team. They support only pipeline events such as start, success, failure, and waiting for action.
Account-, org-, and project-level notification rules, which cover a wider set of events, such as security exemption requests and exemption status changes. These cannot be attached to an individual pipeline and have no filtering.
Some events are available only at the broader scopes. For those events, the lack of filtering leaves two options: notify everyone in the scope or notify no one.
athenahealth organizes Harness with several projects shared by multiple teams, each owning its own pipelines. Access and user groups are managed at the org level, so there is no narrower group that maps to the owners of a particular pipeline.
Use case
A central security team wants to be notified when a security exemption is requested or its status changes. That works today, because the rule can be set at the account or project level and sent to a security channel.
The team that owns the affected pipeline needs the same information, because they are the ones who must act on it or who are waiting on an approval. Today that isn’t possible, for these reasons:
A project-level rule can’t say “for these pipelines, notify Team A, and for those, notify Team B.”
Org-level user groups would notify every person in the org about every event.
Pipeline-level notifications don’t support these event types.
The result is that either the owning team isn’t notified, or a shared channel receives alerts from every team and becomes noise that people ignore.
