It seems strange that a click on an item in a chart or table can add to global Dashboard filtering and and will instantly refresh the data in the Dashboard, yet the Filters added to the top of the page do not trigger an auto refresh. Can we have the Dashboard auto refresh itself as things are added or removed from the added filters?

Hello Trish! This is actually a feature of Looker called cross filtering, which you can see in the documentation here: https://cloud.google.com/looker/docs/cross-filtering-dashboards
Looker does support the ability to auto-refresh, but this is at a set time cadence. Please read more here: https://cloud.google.com/looker/docs/editing-user-defined-dashboards#autorefresh

joseph.lopez I utilise both of these as appropriate, but neither helps when it comes to end users having to click refresh with every change in the Dashboard filters. This doesn't make UX sense when a cross-filter addition is auto refreshed
