We would posit that this behavior is counterintuitive to the idea of a template. Things can be overlaid on a template, not 'overwritten'. The defaults defined in the template should be inherited by the entities implementing the template, not copied directly into them. Having to define the same default across multiple different files and keeping them in sync comes across as more rigid than flexible. If there is any way for this behavior to change, so that it matches what the documentation implies, that would be great.
